Attempt on the life of Ingushetia's prime minister

Attempt on the life of Ingushetia's prime minister

By Timur Aliyev

NAZRAN, Ingushetia – An attempt on the life of the Ingush republic's prime minister, Ibragim Malsagov, took place on August 25.

At approximately 2 pm there were two explosions in the region of Nazran's construction bazaar some 200 metres from the premier's house as Malsagov was passing in his Mercedes escorted by two police cars.

The explosions detonated at an interval of a few seconds - contact mines had been placed several metres from each other. As a result Malsagov was injured in the leg, one of his guards, Amir Tsechoyev, was killed on the spot, and two other policemen received injuries.

According to doctors of the republic's central hospital where the victims were taken, Malsagov "was injured by splinters in the right hand and shin."

Malsagov was appointed prime minister several months ago. Before that he worked as the republic's Minister of Construction, and was involved in the construction business.

The Ingush Interior Ministry said that the total power of the explosive devices was equivalent to several kilograms of TNT. The republic's Public Prosecutor's Office has begun criminal proceedings under two articles of the criminal code relating to "terrorism" and "murder".

Beslan Khamkhoyev, acting head of the Ingush Interior Ministry, stated to journalists that "the attempt on the life of the Ingush government is connected with recent actions of the republic's authorities in the liquidation of bandit formations". According to him, "all the recent explosions in Ingushetia form a single chain."

Several days earlier a similar terrorist act took place in Nazran. A contact mine that exploded in the centre of the city killed Ingush resident Khamzat Imagozhev, and two police officers also received injuries.
