NATO chief urges political settlement in Chechnya

Moscow, 23 November: NATO has started to gain a better understanding of the problems facing Russia in Chechnya, NATO Secretary-General George Robertson has said.

After the 11 September tragedy in the USA, NATO has been increasingly perceptive of Russia's concern over international terror in Chechnya, Robertson said at a press conference before his departure from Moscow on Friday [23 November].

NATO respects Russia's territorial integrity, but it is also sincerely concerned over the human rights record in Chechnya. The alliance believes that a political solution to the Chechen problem would be more appropriate, Robertson said.
