Assassination attempt on military commander of Urus-Martan district

Ruslan Isayev, North Caucasus – Today, at about 1 p.m., an assasination attempt was made on the commander of Urus-Martan district, southwest of the capital Grozny, general Geidar Gadzhiev.

The kamikaze attack took place in the centre of Urus-Martan, close to the local military headquarters. A woman with an explosive on her body came to the group of soldiers, one of them being general Gadzhiev, and brought into effect the explosive mechanism under her dress. As a result, one serviceman died right on the spot and two soldiers sustained serious injuries. General Gadzhiev, who was an intended target of the attacker, was taken to hospital with severe injuries.

The woman attacker has not been identified yet. Preliminary reports say she was a resident of Urus-Martan. Local people claim Gadzhiev was hated by many in the town. As they say, he was infamous for his ruthless behaviour towards civilians. During “mopping-up” operations under Gadzhiev’s command, soldiers detained innocent people putting stealthily arms and ammunition to their homes before. Gadzhiev himself allegedly beat defenceless people.

In the most recent case, during a “mopping-up” operation in Alkhazurovo settlement on October 8, Gadzhiev beat two local women, Natalya Akhmadova and Raisa Murtsalyeva, right in front of the eyes of the villagers. As a result of beating in her abdomen, the latter, who was four months pregnant, miscarried after transport to hospital, which is evidenced by the medical record from the district hospital in Urus-Martan.

Shortly after the incident in Alkhazurovo people blocked the district administration building and local military headquarters in Urus-Martan seeking the legal action against the commander Gadzhiev. The case went to the district attorney but no measures to bring Gadzhiev to criminal liability have been made so far. One version says the kamikaze attacker was one of the general’s victims.
