Calendar of Events - June 2002

June 3, Roston-on-Don (Russia)

The military court in Rostov-on-Don should resume hearings concerning Russian Colonel Yuri Budanov, who had been charged with rape and murder of Chechen girl Elza Kungayeva in late March 2000.

June 10-12, Voronezh (Russia)

The Committee on Migration, Refugees and Demography of the Council of Europe holds a hearing on the humanitarian situation of refugees and displaced persons in CIS countries.

June 10-13, Strasbourg

The European Parliament holds a plenary sitting.
The draft agenda, which according to current information does not contain a discussion on Chechnya, is available at the website of the European Parliament.

June 16-24, Russia

Olara A. Otunnu, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, visits Moscow and the Northern Caucasus, including Nazran and Grozny, focusing on the situation of children affected by the conflict in Chechnya.

June 20-21, Moscow

The Inter-Regional Human Rights Network Group, which runs web portal Human Rights Online, holds international conference "Outlook for Freedom". The conference will focus on the implications on human rights and freedoms during the worldwide campaign of struggle against terrorism and extremism after the tragedy of September 11 and on protection of online civil rights (privacy, freedom of access to information, freedom of speech). The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) holds its plenary session (the third part of the 2002 session).
