Calendar of Events - January 2002

This schedule of major events related to the conflict in Chechnya is continuously updated and completed. Announcements for planned or expected events or any other suggestions are most welcome (e-mail: mail (at) watchdog.cz)

January 13-16, Chechnya / Ingushetia

Council of Europe's Migration Committee rapporteur Tadeusz Iwinski visits Chechnya and Ingushetia. He will go to Znamenskoye (Chechen Republic) and Karabulak (Ingush Republic), where he will visit the centres set up to provide temporarily displaced persons with shelter for the winter. He will also have talks with Vladimir Kalamanov, Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the Chechen Republic, and representatives of the OSCE mission.
A press briefing with the rapporteur will be held at Vnukovo airport at around 18h00 on Tuesday 15 January.

January 15, Russia / Chechnya / Ingushetia

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Ruud Lubbers arrives in Moscow on a four-day visit, during which he meets with Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov and Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov. Visit to camps for displaced persons from Chechnya in neighboring Ingushetia is also planned.

January 22, Moscow

Memorial Human Rights Centre holds its press conference called "New Year in Chechnya - Cocin-Jurt, Argun, where next?" in the Press Promotion Institute, Tverskoj bulvar on January 22, 13.30. The theme of the conference is deterioration of the human rights situation in Chechnya.

January 23, Strasbourg

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), which holds its plenary session on January 21-25, will discuss the conflict in Chechnya, taking into consideration the latest report by Lord Judd, the co-chairman of the PACE / Russia's State Duma Joint Working Group.

January 26, Chechnya

Aslan Maskhadov, who was elected President of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria on January 27, 1997, is to complete his five-year term of office. Recently the Ichkerian "State Defence Committee" ruled that the elections of new Chechen President and Parliament would be postponed due to ongoing fighting in Chechnya.

January 30, Washington D.C.

A briefing on the subject "The Prospects for Peace in Chechnya" is held in the Rayburn Building of the U.S. House of Representatives, sponsored by the National Endowment for Democracy and the American Committee for Peace in Chechnya. Participating in the meeting are Ilyas Akhmadov, Foreign Minister of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, Andrei Babitsky, Russian war correspondent for RFE/RL, and Zbigniew Brzezinski, former U.S. national security advisor.
