December 5, Human Rights Watch

HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH - WORLD REPORT 2001

Human Rights Watch published their annual world report which reviews human rights practices in seventy countries and describes events from November 1999 through October 2000. In the section devoted to the Russian Federation the report summarizes the main events related to the conflict in Chechnya.

December 18, Memorial

ADDRESS GIVEN BY OLEG ORLOV, REPRESENTATIVE OF THE HRC ‘MEMORIAL’ AT THE MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE FOR LEGAL AFFAIRS AND HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL OF EUROPE

On December 18, the Committee for Legal Affairs and Human Rights Council of Europe on its meeting in Paris heard a report by its rapporteur on the conflict in Chechnya, Rudolf Bindig. The human rights centre “Memorial” representative Oleg Orlov addressed the Committee to provide evidence on the latest developments in Chechnya and the lack of communication and activity of the Russian authorities. The HRC Memorial report states that civilian population is constantly subjected to grenade and artillery attacks, ungrounded detention and looting, people disappear, are tortured and murdered.
