Three more people kidnapped in ChechnyaRuslan Isayev, North Caucasus - A group of camouflaged, armed men abducted a local schoolteacher in the environs of Grozny on January 29. Her whereabouts and reasons for the kidnapping remain unknown.
In Achkhoi-Martan, two local residents were kidnapped during the night of January 1. Armed men severely beat the victims, shoved them into cars and drove off to an unknown destination.
At a recent meeting with the Moscow-backed Chechen head Alu Alkhanov, members of the Russian military admitted that security agencies and armed forces are involved in some kidnappings that have taken place in Chechnya.
According to the Russian human rights organization Memorial, which monitors abduction cases in a large part of Chechnya, last year at least 396 locals were kidnapped in that country, of which 175 disappeared without trace. (T/E)
