Purges underway in Chechen police

Ruslan Isayev, North Caucasus – Three Chechen policemen suspected of complicity with guerrilla fighters were arrested in Grozny’s Leninsky district on Thursday by officers of the Directorate of Internal Security of the Chechen Republic’s Interior Ministry.

All three are accused of links with field commander Isa Munayev, whose group operates on the territory of the Chechen capital. Formal charges will shortly be brought against them.

According to pro-Moscow Chechen Minister of Foreign Affairs Ruslan Alkhanov, in the last few months alone more than fifty Chechen policemen have been arrested for complicity with guerrilla fighters.

At the same time as the Chechen police are conducting a purge of their ranks, the number of serious crimes in Chechnya does not diminish. In one twenty-four hour period alone, on the night of November 24-25, five people were kidnapped in various districts, according to a source in the Chechen Interior Ministry.
