Escalation of security measures in Chechnya before electionsTimur Aliyev, North Caucasus - A security operation was carried out in the Leninsky district of Grozny during the morning on August 17. Many streets around the Krasny Molot factory were sealed off by armored vehicles. This action was carried out by both the Chechen special police force called OMON and by federal troops. According to eyewitnesses, two young men were detained.
The Chechen Interior Ministry stated that these measures were part of a general passport check before the presidential elections scheduled for August 29. According to them, such special operations are intended to protect people against the activities of criminal gangs.
All forces of the Chechen Interior Ministry were transferred to their barracks at the beginning of the month. Additional police are patrolling the streets of Chechen cities. The number of the fixed checkpoints in Chechnya has increased. Mobile checkpoints are used for checking documents on roads.
Similar operations have been conducted in neighboring Ingushetia since August 15.
