Local aid worker shot dead in Grozny(Prague Watchdog) – A Chechen worker of Czech humanitarian organization People in Need Foundation (PINF) was shot dead in the Chechen capital of Grozny on Sunday, June 29.
According to PINF's North Caucasus desk officer Marek Vozka, a group of unknown men in civilian clothes arrived at Vakhayev’s house. Then a row broke out between them and Vakhayev’s family, and for reasons remaining unknown one of the men took out a pistol and shot him dead.
The 24-year-old Muslim Vakhayev participated in the implementation of the organization’s school programmes.
Earlier this year, PINF announced that its local coordinator Ibragim Zyazikov, who was overseeing security and acting as an escort and guard for PINF's humanitarian convoys, disappeared in Grozny in late February. His whereabouts are still unknown.
The People in Need Foundation is one of the foreign humanitarian organizations operating directly in Chechnya. It launched its activities in Chechnya and Ingushetia during the first Russian-Chechen war and has been present in the region again since 2000. (A,P/T) |
