Relatives of Umar Dzhabrailov being killed in Chechnya

Timur Aliyev, North Caucasus – Two relatives of Umar Dzhabrailov, a well-known Chechen businessman living in Moscow, were killed and one kidnapped in the past three months.

On February 5, the cut-off head of Dzhabrailov´s 36-year-old second cousin Emin Abayev was found next to the building of Novye Atagi´s local administration, announced the Chechen Interior Ministry. One day earlier Abayev´s family had reported him as missing.

On January 31, the businessman´s cousin and an employee of the Austrian humanitarian organization Hilfswerk, Zaurbek Dzhabrailov, was shot dead in his head in Ordzhonikidzevskaya in Ingushetia. The Ingush Interior Ministry said that Zaurbek Dzhabrailov was killed at his home.

The relatives say that in 2002 the killed men were detained and then released in exchange for several thousand dollars.

Another businessman´s relative, 35-year-old Pasha Dzhabrailov was kidnapped from his house in Novye Atagi on December 17. He has not been freed yet and his whereabouts are unknown.

Umar Dzhabrailov, the co-owner of the Radisson-Slavyanskaya Hotel, became known in 2000 when he ran for the Russian president.
