Chechen Military Prosecutor's Office creates special group for search for disappeared personsTimur Aliyev, North Caucasus – The Chechen Military Prosecutor's Office has set up a special investigation and operational group which will search for persons who have disappeared in the region.
Chechnya’s prosecutor Yuri Ponomaryov told Prague Watchdog's correspondent on Monday that the resolution to establish the group was signed by the Russian Military Prosecutor General. The new body should start working on January 1, 2003.
According to information provided by Ponomaryov, the existence of the task force was agreed upon by the leadership of the Chechen Republic. The group will be granted appropriate authorities enabling it to carry out investigation at any military units, where the access of representatives of civil law enforcement agencies is limited.
The Nazran-based office of human rights centre Memorial told Prague Watchdog correspondent that this year it registers over 600 missing people.
