Blast in police station in Grozny

Timur Aliyev, North Caucasus – A powerful explosion ripped through the police station in the Zavodskoi district in Grozny on October 10 at 5 p.m. According to the Interior Ministry, the blast was caused by an explosive device. Practically the whole building collapsed and 24 dead bodies and some 10 injured people were picked from the rubble.

The bomb with an explosive power equivalent to 2 kilograms of TNT was placed on the third floor. At that time, officers held a meeting in the building. The press-service of the Interior Ministry of the Chechen Republic officially considers Chechen fighters to be responsible for the attack.

”Since it is virtually impossible for somebody from the outside to bring in an explosive to the tightly protected police station, the most of Grozny’s inhabitants and the vast majority of the police staff believe that the blast was organized either by one of the officers, or a member of special services,” said Chairman of the Chechen Committee of National Salvation Ruslan Badalov.

The envoy of Chechen President Aslan Maskhadov, Akhmed Zakayev, claims that the aim of the attack is ”to neutralize the possible beginning of a major action by Chechen fighters.” ”Yesterday’s terrorist act in the Zavodskoi district, as well as all the preceding ones whose victims were ”Chechen policemen” is a result of Kremlin’s policies trying to artificially drag our nation to the abyss of a civil war,” said Zakayev.
