Shooting in Vedeno

Ruslan Isayev, North Caucasus – Last midnight Chechen fighters opened fire against the district military headquarters in Vedeno, southeastern Chechnya. Eyewitnesses said the shooting lasted for an hour. No information about casualties is available at the moment. However, local people had to spend the whole night in cellars.

When the shooting died down, Vedeno was hit by artillery fire coming from the military headquarters and the positions of Russian forces in the eastern part of Vedeno, which resulted in partial damage of a few houses and farm buildings. None of the local people have been hurt.

This morning Russian artillery and military helicopters attacked forest tracts in the southern part of Vedeno. Transport on roads leading to the district centre has been reduced. Besides, some people are leaving Vedeno in fear of a “mopping-up” operation.
