Civilians continue to die in ChechnyaRuslan Isayev, North Caucasus - On February 8, a man living in Argun, about 15 kilometres east of the capital Grozny, was shot dead by a sniper. The man, at the age of about fifty, was killed 15 metres from his house on his way home from the neighbours' house. Eyewitnesses say the shooting came from a Russian soldiers’ checkpoint.
The same night, at about 11 p. m., masked Russian soldiers burst into the house in Argun’s Shosseynaya street, killing an old woman and her son. As eyewitnesses claim, the soldiers took away a videorecorder and a small sum (about 2,000 roubles).
Last week a column of Russian military vehicles came under attack near the entrance to Argun. On its way from the Shali headquarters, the column was moving to the Khankala military base. A serviceman of the Sali headquarters company said the fight claimed the life of one civilian passing by the place of the incident. Several Russian soldiers were killed and injured, and a few armoured vehicles were destroyed. No reports are available concerning the losses of the attackers.
