Children of Chechen refugees died in fireRuslan Isayev, North Caucasus – Three young children died in the Karabulak refugee camp, central Ingushetia, when their tent caught fire from a short circuit of electric wiring.
While the fire was spreading all over the tent, neighbours managed to carry away a one-year-old child that died later on the way to hospital. After the fire was put out, bodies of two children at the age of three and four were discovered inside the tent. In order to save themselves from the blazes the children took shelter in the cellar where they suffocated in the smoke.
The children were left in the tent alone because their father, a disabled, had been taken to hospital on the same day, and their mother went for a ration of humanitarian aid. The tragedy deteriorated her mental state and she has been sitting next to the burnt tent for four days already, having refused to admit her children’s death.
The incident is the first case of its kind that occurred in Chechen refugee camps.
