Third youth injured by exploding shell in Staraya Sunzha dies in Grozny hospital By Ruslan Isayev
CHECHNYA – One of the two high-school students who were injured by an exploding shell in Staraya Sunzha died in Grozny’s 9th hospital on Friday.
The 16-year-old thus became the third youth to be killed in the blast, which occurred in a derelict house in Staraya Sunzha on the outskirts of Grozny on Thursday evening. A fourth youth is still in hospital with multiple injuries. Doctors are also concerned by his condition.
Immediately after the powerful explosion, which shook nearby multi-storey dwellings, law enforcement personnel began to arrive in Staraya Sunzha, including explosives experts and police investigators. According to one report, the youths were attempting to dismantle an artillery shell in order to remove the explosive charge from it. The investigation now underway will clarify the purpose for which they were going to use it. It is possible that they planned to manufacture a homemade device for subsequent use against Russian soldiers and police.
If this is true, then it will be a cause of uneasiness to the Chechen authorities, since there has recently been an increase in recruiting by guerrillas, who are trying to draw youths of school age into their units. (Translation by DM) (T)
