Several weapons caches found in Chechnya By Umalt Chadayev
CHECHNYA – A cache containing four “martyrs’ belts” has been discovered in a suburb of Grozny.
On March 8, a large guerrilla weapons cache was found by officials of the law-enforcement agencies on the outskirts of the village of Prigorodnoye, situated a few kilometres to the southeast of the Chechen capital. Two additional caches of weapons and ammunition have been discovered in the mountainous Itum-Kalinsky and Vedensky districts of Chechnya.
"Yesterday, during a follow-up search based on operational information, a carefully camouflaged guerrilla weapons cache was found on the outskirts of the village of Prigorodnoye. It contained four so-called ‘martyrs’ belts’, five ‘Mukha’ disposable grenade launchers, two sub-machine guns, thirty grenades, several radio transmitters and a large number of automatic weapons cartridges," a source in the Chechen law-enforcement agencies reported.
Two more weapons caches were found in the environs of the district centre of Itum-Kale (Itum-Kalinsky district) and the village of Khorochoy, Vedensky district.
Furthermore, on March 6 in Achkhoy-Martanovsky district (southwest Chechnya) a large hiding-place was discovered, which contained four improvised explosive devices (IED), thirty-four radio transmitters, two pistols, ten fuses for hand grenades and about five hundred cartridges for automatic weapons.
In the opinion of the Chechen law-enforcement official the discovery of new weapons and ammunition caches in Chechnya attests to the fact that the guerrillas plan to activate their operations with the onset of the spring-summer season.
