Attack on OMON base in GroznyRuslan Isayev
CHECHNYA - On April 20 in the Leninsky District of Grozny a base of the Chechen OMON came under fire from unknown persons. At around 11pm several grenades exploded on the base’s territory, fired from an underbarrel grenade launcher in the street.
After the policemen opened answering fire, the attackers, of whom there were probably three, disappeared.
On examination of the place from which the firing came, discovery was made of a Niva jeep which had been abandoned by the attackers, and OMON personnel took it back to the base. As it was being examined, there was an explosion. As a result, one officer died, and four were wounded.
It does not appear to be possible to establish the owner of the vehicle, as all the identification numbers on its body and engine had been erased beforehand.
On the same night in the Vedensky district of Chechnya four servicemen were wounded as a result of the explosion of a landmine laid by Chechen guerrillas. The wounded soldiers were taken to a military hospital. The doctors assess their medical condition as normal.
