Law enforcement agencies in Chechnya working at increased strength as previously
Ruslan Isayev, North Caucasus – Law enforcement agencies in Chechnya are working at increased strength as previously. Mobile police checkpoints have been posted on practically every important motor highway. The authorities explained the increased measures by saying that there is still the danger of a resurgence of activity by guerrillas.
A ban has been imposed on goods vehicles entering Grozny until January 10. None the less, an armed conflict between a group of guerrillas and Russian and Chechen law enforcers has taken place on the western outskirts of Grozny in Staropromyslovsky district.
As a source in the Staropromyslov District Office of Internal Affairs (ROVD) reports, two guerrillas were killed as a result, while the others escaped. On the law enforcement side one FSB officer was killed and about ten were wounded. (MD/T)
