Special operation against guerrillas in Argun

Ruslan Isayev, North Caucasus – Local police, in cooperation with the military, have begun a special operation targetting guerrillas in Argun, the third largest Chechen city.

A source at the local Interior Ministry said that there were some fatalities and injuries among the guerrillas who were found in a house on the city's main street.

Our Prague Watchdog correspondent talked via phone with a local newsman, and was told that transport into and out of the city had been stopped. The journalist also said there had been heavy gunfire in the center of city for about an hour. Combat aircraft were seen flying overhead, but were not firing their weapons.

Military sources reported that the main purpose of the operation was aimed at capturing a Chechen guerrilla commander, whose name was not disclosed.
