Clash between guerrillas and federal forces in Eshelkhatoy

Ruslan Isayev, North Caucasus – On Wednesday, a clash between Russian military and Chechen guerrillas took place in the Eshelkhatoy village in the Vedensky district.

As a result of the two-hour battle, five Russian soldiers were killed and seven wounded, according to a source in the Chechen Interior Ministry. Nothing is known about possible casualties among the guerrillas.

The attack was thought to be orchestrated by a group under the leadership of Apti Sulumkhadzhiyev, who reports directly to Aslan Maskhadov, Chechen resistance leader and President of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria.
