Recent guerrilla clashes in ChechnyaRuslan Isayev, North Caucasus – Forces of the Moscow-backed Chechen Interior Ministry are carrying out targeted mopping-up operations throughout Chechnya. The guerrillas, however, are putting up fierce resistance.
Early Saturday morning in Grozny, a detachment of the Chechen special police force, OMON, targeted several homes in the Leninsky district and in one house found four guerrillas. In the ensuing battle, one guerrilla was killed and the remaining others surrendered. Four policemen were injured.
The guerrilla group was led by Isa Munayev, field commander in charge of partisan operations in the Groznensky sector.
Meanwhile, the situation in the Vedensky and Nozhai-Yurtovsky districts remains complicated. Chechen Interior Ministry forces have stepped up their activities to prevent guerrilla groups from staging attacks prior to the Moscow-staged elections of the republic’s president scheduled for late August.
Almost daily battles and shelling can be heard in the forests. The federal army reports their successes, but discloses no information about their casualties. (T/E)
