Chechen guerrillas active againRuslan Isayev, North Caucasus, May 26 – As of this week, Chechen resistance fighters have stepped up their activities. For three days sounds of gunfire and exploding mines could be heard throughout the towns and villages of the Shalinsky and Vedensky districts.
On Wednesday morning a Russian army truck carrying six soldiers was blown up by a land mine between the villages of Elistanzhi and Mahkety. According to a Chechen Interior Ministry source, the blast killed one officer and wounded five members of Russian special forces.
In Vedeno, guerrillas opened fire on a helicopter, wounding three soldiers.
The Chechen militarized group Vostok, which is under the command of Sulim Yamadayev and serves the Moscow-backed authorities, exchanged fire with the guerrillas. During the shoot-out, four members of the Vostok group were killed.
In the Groznensky Selskoi district, five soldiers riding in a military car on the Grozny-Shatoi road near the village of Prigorodnoye were ambushed and killed.
In Grozny, the guerrillas opened fire at four checkpoints in the last twenty-four hours, wounding five Russian soldiers.
