Police car attacked in Ingushetia

Ruslan Isayev, North Caucasus – On September 29, a patrol car containing a local special police unit OMON was attacked near Karabulak in Ingushetia, resulting in one policeman killed and five wounded.

The car was heading toward Nazran to begin patrolling one of the main roads when it was attacked.

According to eyewitnesses, the patrol car was overtaken by three men; one of whom was apparently wounded during the assault, but they all managed to escape.

Nothing is known about the identity, nationality or whereabouts of the attackers, but inhabitants are convinced they might be locals who are members of one of the radical Islamic groups, known as vahhabists.

The conflict between the authorities and vahhabists occurs in all Islamic republics of North Caucasus, including Ingushetia. In the village of Pliyevo not far from Karabulak, one of the local mosques, reportedly used by vahhabists, was closed three months ago after a policeman was killed there. However, it remains unclear whether these two attacks are linked in any way.
