Federal allowances seized by muggers on the way to Shatoi

Ruslan Isayev, North Caucasus - The regiments of Russian soldiers deployed in Shatoi district, south of the capital Grozny, will not receive their money allowances as 2.3 million rubles, about 80 thousand dollars, making their monthly salaries, were seized by unknown muggers during the transport between the villages of Starye Atagi and Chiri-Yurt.

The car with the money was going from the Russian army headquarters in Khankala to Shatoi military base when it was ambushed by an armed group. The attackers disarmed the car's security, three Russian servicemen and one Chechen policeman, and snatched them together with the money. All four security members were later released without their arms, car and money. The Chechen policeman claims the perpetrators were members of one of the Chechen military units.

Shortly after the incident, Chiri-Yurt settlement came under mortar attack resulting in two killings and three serious injuries. Russian troops carried out a "mopping-up" operation in Stariye Atagi, Duba-Yurt and Chiri-Yurt with no success of finding the money.

People in Shatoi say the incident could have been playacted by Russian soldiers who staged the robbery to get hold of the money.
