5 September

Russian federal army implemented an enforced security regime on the eve of Chechnya's Independence Day, claiming that Chechen fighters would try to carry out attacks

Russian forces have lost 23 military helicopters in the war in Chechnya since fighting resumed about a year ago –- Russian Defence Ministry

An Associated Press reporter was detained, beaten and held in a covered pit overnight by Russian troops sweeping Chechnya's capital for rebels

6 September

Speaker of the Chechen Parliament, Ruslan Alikhadjiyev, who was arrested in Shali on May 17, wasn’t tortured to death in prison as reported on September 2 by Chechen MPs but Russia doesn't know where he is –- Russian officials

7 September

19 soldiers were killed, 90 injured in Chechnya last week (Aug 31 - Sept 7) -- Russian Defence Ministry

8 September

The enforced security regime, implemented on September 5, was removed, except for the Nozhay-Yurt, Shatoy, and Vedeno districts, and several other places

9 September

Akhmad Kadyrov, head of Chechnya's administration, and Bislan Gantamirov, allegedly his ex-deputy, broke off with each other

10 September

Head of administration of the Tsatsan-Yurt (Oktyabrskoe) village in the Kurchaloyevsky district, Bukar Akhmatov, was shot dead by Chechen fighters

14 September

The FBI Chief Director Louis Freeh expressed the readiness of FBI to assist Russia in discovering links between Chechen rebels and international terrorist organizations, Osama bin Laden in particular

16 September

Col. Shamil Azayev, deputy chief of police in the Vedeno district, was killed by unknown attackers

19 September

The human rights situation in Chechnya was described as "slowly improving" by Council of Europe delegation in Russia.

20 September

Russian government decided to bury 66 sets of remains of unidentified soldiers killed during the 1994-1996 war in Chechnya.

Council of Europe Secretary General, Walter Schwimmer, visited Moscow to seek clarifications on the situation in Chechnya.

21 September

Officials addressing the State Duma at a hearing on Chechnya heavily criticized the government and military for failing to protect human rights in Chechnya. Chechnya’s recently elected Duma deputy, Aslanbek Aslakhanov, stated that people living in Chechnya are being subjected to "experiments in cruelty, shamelessness and immorality."

19 Russian soldiers were killed, 51 wounded in Chechnya last week (Sept 14 – Sept 20) – Russian Defence Ministry.

22 September

The EU announced it had sent military equipment to Georgia to help protect its border against attacks from Chechnya.

Interior ministers of Georgia and Turkey denied the allegations that Chechen fighters used their territories for penetration to Chechnya

24 September

Preparations for resuming air transport to Grozny started - Command of the Interior Ministry Forces

25 September

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder arrived in Moscow to meet shortly with Vladimir Putin.

President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Lord Russell-Johnston, stressed that the situation in Chechnya does not justify lifting sanctions taken against Russia.

27 September

French Foreign Minister, Hubert Vedrine, arrived in Russia.

28 September

On its Autumn Session the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) discussed recent developments in the Chechen Republic. PACE stressed that Russia’s steps to settle the conflict were insufficient and the parliamentarians decided to set up an ad hoc committee to monitor the follow-up of their recommendations.

Former chief of the Operative Staff of the Chechen government, Mumadi Saidayev, was captured several days ago -- Russian and Chechen sources.

29 September

President Putin has presided over the opening session of the newly-formed State Council, a body made up of eighty-eight regional governors.
