Both parties to the conflict in Chechnya continue to commit serious violations of human rights and breaches of international humanitarian law. Russian forces are responsible for the overwhelming majority of physical harm and material damage suffered by civilians.

Amnesty International
Amnesty International today [Jan 24] called upon the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) to take urgent action to prevent human rights violations in Chechnya. "As a defender of human rights the Council of Europe has a responsibility to ensure that strong pressure is applied to Russia." Amnesty International said.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria
Minister of Foreign Affairs Ilyas Akhmadov issued today [January 22] a statement urging the Council of Europe to take "a proper stand against the Russian brutality". "No justification is good enough to let Russia get away with mass murders, torture, rape, and ultimately genocide against the Chechen nation"
