Special operation underway in Argun

By Ruslan Isayev

CHECHNYA - Chechen and Russian security forces are conducting a special search operation today in the central Chechen town of Argun, where Abdul-Khalim Sadullayev, President of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, was killed in an armed clash on Saturday.

The town is encircled by security forces and everyone‘s identity cards are being checked. There are especially large numbers of security officials in the so-called Indian Settlement area on Svobody Street.  The shootout in which Sadullayev and two policemen were killed took place there yesterday.

Security forces are still searching for two guerrillas who accompanied the Chechen resistance leader. They managed to escape by driving off in a local resident’s car and headed for the village of Mesker-Yurt, south of Argun.

The police detained two local people last night, suspecting them of having been linked to Sadullayev. Their names have not been disclosed.
