Markets closed in Ingushetia before presidential election; Internet under controlTimur Aliyev, North Caucasus – Beginning August 25, all markets in Ingushetia will be closed until the end of the week. According to the Ingush Interior Ministry this is necessary to protect public security before and on the presidential election day in neighboring Chechnya.
“Because terrorist acts may occur in public places, the markets will be temporarily closed”.
However, this cautious step is accompanied by the government’s undemocratic monitoring of Internet usage by citizens of Ingushetia.
“Since the beginning of the week monitoring of all Internet channels have been made available to members of special services,” said a source in a local telecommunication company. (H/E,T)
