Maskhadov ready to hand over Basayev to Sharia court

Ruslan Isayev, North Caucasus – If the involvement of Chechen field commander Shamil Basayev in the terrorist act in Moscow is confirmed, he will be handed over to the Supreme Sharia Court, Chechen President Aslan Maskhadov says in a statement on an audio-cassette made available to journalists today.

Maskhadov says that he had stripped Basayev of all his posts and now his fate will be solved in line with military laws. Chechen President states that he opposes actions to which innocent people fall victim.

„In 1995 I was against the raid on Budyonovsk and I categorically oppose terror in any of its forms because it discredits nation’s fight for freedom,“ Maskhadov says.

Chechen President claims that the resistance movement is strong enough to free Chechnya from the Russian military. Maskhadov repeatedly raised a peace initiative: „Just once look into the face of truth. This war must be ended by peace as there exists no other solution,“ Maskhadov says.
