Chechen field commanders give support to Maskhadov’s peace effortsRuslan Isayev, North Caucasus – Most Chechen field commanders gave their support to the efforts of Chechen President Aslan Maskhadov aimed at termination of fighting in Chechnya, according to an unnamed source who participated in a Sunday meeting of Ichkerian military and political leadeship in southern Chechnya.
The meeting was attended by virtually all top field commanders, except for Shamil Basayev, who sent his deputy, and former Vice-President Vakha Arsanov, who was recently removed from his post by Maskhadov, the source said.
The Chechen leadership became acquainted with a report worked out by Chechen Vice-Premier Akhmed Zakayev on the results of his meeting with Viktor Kazantsev, Russian President’s plenipotentiary in the Southern Federal District. Zakayev himself was not present at the meeting with Chechen field commanders.
The participants in the meeting made a decision on future contacts with Moscow. No details were disclosed but the unnamed source claims that most field commanders expressed their support to Maskhadov’s efforts to find a political solution to the war in Chechnya.
