NOONE EXPECTS INQUISITION - EVEN "GLASNOST" FOUNDATION

An excerpt from Glasnost's North Caucasus Daily News Service for Aug 29, 2000

Militia paid a visit to our office at about 7 p.m. on August 28th. One of the militia men knocked on the door saying he was the district officer, but noone opened the door, for the man looked nothing like the real district officer. After that men in uniform started breaking the front door, however it was too well made to be opened that way, so they had to kick out the kitchen door.

Anyway, 10 minutes later 7 special squad officers and a junior lieutenant laid everyone on the floor, helping themselves with machine guns and loud curses. Out of those 14 put on the floor there were 2 women and a 11-year-old child, but later they were allowed to get up and sent to another room. The remaining 11 men got foot kicks and only after that asked to show their papers. However, officers didn't care to check all papers and couldn't think of a reason for their actions, nevertheless denying to qualify them as a search.

Finally, the junior lieutenant and one of the special squad officers named themselves and even showed their IDs. Sergey Grigoryants was allowed to get up and show his ID only 20 minutes later everyone was laid on the floor. Oddly enough, Grigoryants wasn't allowed to talk to his lawyer when she called on the phone, but could talk to someone from "Liberty" radio when they called. The lieutenant talked to the radio too and then called the 18th militia department for support. Meanwhile all officers slipped away but for the junior lieutenant, who went away only when a captain came.

The whole story seems rather weird to all "Glasnost" workers, although hardly any of us will be surprised if it repeated in future.
