Attacks on bank security guards in Chechnya have become more frequent this yearRuslan Isayev, North Caucasus – The governing body of Chechen law enforcement agencies has made it obligatory for banks and financial security services to strengthen the protection for cash deposits, collections and deliveries.
The pretext for this is the increasing frequency of attacks on security transport vehicles. Moreover, the law enforcement agencies claim that most of the cash seized as a result of the attacks has been used to meet the needs of the guerrillas.
However, according to an employee of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Interior Ministry of the Chechen Republic who has asked to remain anonymous, the raids on the security guards are actually carried out by the law enforcement agencies themselves, by agreement with bank staff involved in dishonest transactions. The police officer says it is convenient to blame such incidents on the guerrillas.
“I’m not a supporter of the guerrillas, but the truth must be known. We’re thieving from ourselves, and someone is finding it convenient to cook the finances by putting the blame on the guerrillas,” the Chechen police officer says.
