Dismantling of last Chechen refugee tents started in Ingushetia

Ruslan Isayev, North Caucasus – Dismantling of all tents in which Chechen refugees live has begun in Ingushetia. A group of Ingush migration officials, supported by various law enforcement agencies, have already eliminated nearly all the tents in the village of Ordzhonikidzevskaya.

Karabulak, where many refugees reside in "compact settlements", was the next town on the list scheduled for dismantling; about twenty tents have already been eliminated near Bart, the former refugee camp.

Refugees hoping that during their absence no one would destroy their tents were sadly mistaken - all tents, whose owners were away, were crushed by a bulldozer.

And others, after receiving threats, decided to abandon about thirty tents that sat on the МТF-2 compound in the suburb of Karabulak. Almost everyone then had to move into the building of a cattle-breeding farm.

“Nobody offers any housing to refugees in exchange for their dismantled tents. They treat us like cattle. We’re given only three hours to pack up and leave, otherwise they’ll burn down the tents together with our belongings,” lamented Ayub, an elderly man.

Now it is Nazran’s turn, where in some areas people still live in tents.

This action is broadly supported in both the local and Russian media; journalists resolutely write that only after comfortable housing is offered them do the refugees request that their tents be dismantled.
