Mine victims not officially recognized in ChechnyaTimur Aliyev, North Caucasus – Chechens who have been injured by mines and unexploded shells are denied compensation, said Abu Jamayev, deputy chairman of the Chechen Society for the Disabled.
“Doctors always write ‘common disease’ as a cause of patients’ disabilities. Based on instructions from Moscow, our expert medical and labour commission never diagnoses anyone as being injured by a mine. Apparently, they think that counter-terrorist operations rather than a war are going on here,” explained Jamayev.
”That’s why these people can’t receive any compensation for their suffering as they do in many other countries; they only receive standard disability pensions.
Yet Russian soldiers have been recompensed. For example, relatives of paratroopers who died near Ulus-Kert in 2001 received one million rubles,” he added. (S/E,T) |
