The War Award

The Social Development Institute of Timur Aliyev would like to announce that it is now holding a “War Award” competition. This is essentially an “anti-prize” that will be awarded to either a politician or public figure who “contributed the most” to the onset and continuation of the war in the Chechen Republic (1994-2004).

This event is aimed at attracting the attention of the international and Russian community to the military actions in the Chechen Republic that have now been ongoing for 10 years.

The organizers will accept world-wide nominations from the public for two people, one of which will be a Chechen and the other a non-Chechen.

All names sent in must include a statement describing why the candidate deserves to win this award. Winners will be selected on June 1 by a jury made up of well-known professionals from Russia, Europe and the Caucasus. So far Oleg Panfilov, director of the Center for Journalism in Extreme Situations, and David Petrosyan, political analyst of the Armenian news agency Noyan Tapan, have agreed to be among the jurors.

The winners of the competition will receive an honorable certificate, a yearly subscription to The Chechen Society newspaper and an all-expense-paid three day trip to the Chechen Republic to visit the places where military operations had been underway.

Nominations may be submitted to the organizer's e-mail address iorta@hotbox.ru; to the website of the Committee of Non-Governmental Organizations; or the editor’s offices of The Chechen Society and The Voice of the Chechen Republic.

The best nomination text will be printed in the papers during the run of the competition.
