Reprisals begin in IngushetiaTimur Aliyev, North Caucasus – After the recent guerrilla attack on police facilities in Nazran, the authorities responded with repressive action. On June 23, Ingush police arrested about 40 Chechen male youths; all were from a temporary accommodation center in Altiyevo, a village in the Nazranovsky district.
Eyewitnesses reported that the policemen verbally abused the residents of the temporary accommodation center, threatening them with physical abuse if they failed to cooperate.
When relatives gathered next to the Interior Ministry building to learn about the fate of family members, they were dispersed by the police. Nor did members of the human rights organization Memorial gain admittance into the building either.
Then, on the morning of June 24, a two-story building in the center of Nazran was blown up. According to some sources, the building belonged to Magomet Evloeyv, an Ingush field commander considered to be the organizer of the Monday night raid on Ingushetia.
Local residents now fear possible acts of terrorism and many are leaving the city to stay with relatives in villages. The Ministry of Health, located in Nazran's railway station, has now been moved to a hospital. (D/E,T)
