Mopping-up operation in SamashkiRuslan Isayev, North Caucasus, May 19 – A so called "mopping-up operation" has been underway in the village of Samashki in the Achkhoy-Martan district since May 18. This time servicemen of federal forces did not embark on an across-the-board operation but started searching at selected houses for individuals whom they consider "disloyal".
The special operation was provoked by a land mine explosion which riped through the village during the day. The explosive went off at a moment when a NIVA vehicle with members of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) was arriving in the village.
Immediately after the explosion, one part of Samashki came under fire of the Russian artillery deployed near the village. Fortunately, no one of the residents of Samashki has suffered. The number of the detained has not been determined yet.
Many residents of Samashki, especially the males, started leaving the village immediately after the explosion, fearing a punitive action of federal soldiers. Most of them have been still staying in the neighbouring Ingushetia.
