Mopping-up operation in the village of Valerik

Ruslan Isayev, North Caucasus - Russian troops have blocked the village of Valerik in the Achkhoy-Martan district, some 40 km southwest of Grozny, and launched a "mopping-up operation" there. All entry and exit routes are closed and armoured vehicles block the roads.

Soldiers say that the operation in Valerik was planned and is aimed at discovering hidden weapons and ammunition. About ten people were detained due to their suspected participation in Ichkerian guerillas. All of them are tested and confronted with a computer database containing the names of persons wanted by federal authorities.
