Guerrillas observe temporary ceasefire

Ruslan Isayev, North Caucasus – Not a single incident of attack by units of the Chechen resistance on federal military personnel and representatives of the local law enforcement agencies has been registered during the last few days. This information comes from a source in the Interior Ministry of the Chechen Republic.

"At least there is no such information in our summary of incidents that took place in the last couple of days," the source said.

The temporary unilateral ceasefire recently declared by Aslan Maskhadov, Chechen resistance leader and President of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, is thus being observed.

However, many Russian politicians and military people view the ceasefire as an attempt to mislead the international community.

Meanwhile, the Russian special services continue mopping-up operations, as a result of which local residents go missing. Thus, yesterday morning in the village of Bachi-Yurt in the Kurchaloi district of Chechnya, soldiers arrested three young men aged between 25 and 30. Their location is not known.

On February 5, in the village of Starye Atagi in the Grozny district soldiers also took away three local residents suspected of having contacts with the guerrillas.
