Suspected guerrilla killed in NazranRuslan Isayev, North Caucasus – Akhmet Sambiyev, who according to the special services was Shamil Basayev's closest associate and the successor to Arab field commander Abu-Kuteib, has been killed as a result of a special operation carried out by the law enforcement agencies together with representatives of the special forces in the outskirts of the Ingush city of Nazran.
A suspected member of the Chechen resistance brigades whose identity has so far been kept secret by the special services was also arrested at the site of the special operation.
Three officers of the Ingushetian branch of the Federal Security Service who took part in the capture of the fighters were wounded as a result of the exchange of fire.
According to information obtained by the special services, Sambiyev was one of the guerrillas' principal instructors in mine-laying and the use of explosives, and was in charge of their training. (MD/T)
