Special operation underway in Shalinsky districtRuslan Isayev, North Caucasus - A special operation aimed at rounding up members of Chechen resistance has been ongoing for three days now in the Shalinsky district of southeastern Chechnya.
The Russian Defense Ministry's Vostok unit, consisting of Chechens led by Sulim Yamadayev, is based near the village of Serzhen-Yurt. Their operation is supported by the so-called Chechen presidential security service, which is led by Ramzan Kadyrov, and by Russian combat planes and armored vehicles.
According to a source from the Chechen Interior Ministry, they are searching for guerrilla commanders Aslan Maskhadov and Shamil Basayev.
It is not known how long the operation will last nor what results have so far been achieved, but it is clear that after the recent hostage-taking tragedy in Beslan both Kadyrov and Yamadayev vowed to catch Basayev and Maskhadov.
