Regional branch of Yabloko established in ChechnyaTimur Aliyev, North Caucasus – A constituent conference was held in Grozny on November 6 to set up a new regional branch of the Russian Democratic Party Yabloko in the Chechen Republic.
About fifty people, many of them representatives of the Chechen intelligentsia, i.e. journalists, writers, and university lecturers, became its new members.
In addition, a local chairperson and deputies were selected and a committee was formed.
Sharip Tsuruyev, a journalist and poet, was elected chairman of this branch. During the Kremlin-staged Chechen presidential elections in August he was a representative of Movsar Khamidov, one of the candidates.
“Establishing a branch of a party like Yabloko in Chechnya is a significant event for the republic,” Tsuruyev told Prague Watchdog's correspondent. “It shows that there are still forces wanting the country to develop democratically.”
