Results of the meeting of Zakayev and Kazantsev in MoscowRuslan Isayev, North Caucasus – Representatives of Russia and the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria welcomed the results of the Moscow meeting between Viktor Kazantsev and Akhmed Zakayev. Chechen President’s representative to the talks, Akhmed Zakayev, said in a telephone interview for Prague Watchdog's correnspondent that the main outcome of the dialogue in Moscow was the fact that the two parties concluded that the war has to be stopped.
Zakayev said that it was this particular issue that was widely discussed during the two-hour meeting in Moscow. The Chechen delegation handed over to the Russian President’s plenipotentiary in the Southern Federal Region concrete proposals which could brought the armed resistance to an end and provide a peaceful solution to the conflict.
Zakayev did not elaborate on the essence of the Chechen proposals, claiming they are completely feasible. Aslan Maskhadov’s representative added, however, that for the time being it is too early to speak about some breakthrough in relations with Russia.
During the meeting in Moscow the two parties exchanged their stances, which will be presented to their respective presidents. After the consultations, a new meeting between Kazantsev and Zakayev will take place. The location and date of the meeting is not known yet. Kazantsev’s aides say that they will be satisfied with any place in the Russian territory. The Chechen side stopped attributing crucial importance to this issue already after first contacts with the Russian side were established, Zakayev noted.
Zakayev also said that during the first meeting with Kazantsev the disarmament of Chechen fighters was not discussed. However, during the upcoming talks the question of Chechnya's full demilitarisation will be raised, Zakayev added.
