Groznensky district under threat of spring flooding

Timur Aliyev, North Caucasus – There is a very real threat of melting snows flooding the Groznensky district this year.

According to Shaid Zhamaldayev, the administrative head of the district, the threat comes from the fact that over the last few years no construction work has been carried out on the district water resources; and dams continue to operate despite being in need of repairs and reconstruction.

At the same time the precipitation level in most towns and villages is 150-170% higher than usual, and snow levels in the upper Terek River are 115 – 330% above the norm. “Consequently, this year’s spring flooding is expected to be earlier than usual,” Zhamaldayev said.

With the aim of implementing preventative measures and reducing potential damage in the Grozensky district, special anti-flooding commissions have been created, which will carry out tests and observations at sewerage and hydrotechnical facilities, Zhamaldayev said.

“In addition, the local administrative heads have been instructed to undertake appropriate clean up operations on river banks, lake surfaces and artificial ponds,” he said.
