Shelkovsky district could end up under waterTimur Aliyev, North Caucasus, April 16 - There is a possibility that the Terek River could overflow and flood the Shelkovsky district in northeastern Chechnya, stated Hussein Nutayev, administrative head of the Shelkovsky district.
It seems that at any given time Terek could overflow its banks and flood the villages that are below the river bed. And this danger sharply increases with springtime, so Terek is now just about ready to overflow, Nutayev added.
Nineteen villages are now under this threat. An especially bad situation has developed in the section of the river between the villages of Kurdyuki and Kargalinskaya, where the water has already reached the level of the homes. "The villages of Staroshchedrinskaya,
Chervlyonnaya-Uzlovaya, Bratskoye and Gvardeiskoye are also in imminent danger."
Nutayev believes the main reason for this is the deterioration of the dikes that keep the river in place. According to his data, during the past year alone the Terek River has widened by twenty meters.
