Military lorry runs into bus with students in GroznyTimur Aliyev, North Caucasus – More than 22 people sustained a range of injuries when a Russian military lorry “Ural” ran into a bus with university students. The tragedy happened in the morning on November 14 at a crossroad in the center of Grozny.
The bus belonging to the Chechen State University was on its regular route, carrying students and university employees home after classes.
"Somebody shouted: Look, 'Ural'!," says university lecturer Madina Shamsutdinova, who was on the bus at the moment of the accident. “We turned and saw the lorry hurtling directly at us at breakneck speed. It crashed into the side of our bus.”
The military claimed that the bus driver was responsible for the accident, not giving way to the military vehicle traveling in a convoy. According to them, two accompanying UAZ jeeps drove ahead after which the bus drove into the crossroad and the Ural lorry crashed into it. In line with the current traffic rules, military transport has priority over civilian transport, so the bus was supposed to give way to the Russian military convoy.
However, the bus driver blames the military. According to him, the lorry was not traveling in a convoy and “literally slammed into the bus” at the crossroad.
All casualties were taken to the 9th municipal hospital in Grozny. Many of the 22 sustained severe injuries. Investigation of the traffic accident is carried out by the office of the Prosecutor of the Chechen Republic. (D/T) |
