Statement of the anti-war hunger strike participants in reaction to defamatory accusations in Russian media STATEMENT of the anti-war hunger strike participants in reaction to defamatory accusations in Russian media
June 27, 2001, the village of Ordzhonikidzevskaya, the Republic of Ingushetia
We, the participants in the hunger strike “For Peace in Chechnya”, are greatly indignant at the allegations in Russian media accusing us of following political orders of Chechen guerilla fighters and receiving financial support from them.
These accusations are nothing else than a cynical lie and pure libel having the only aim: to tarnish our reputation and the image of the ever-growing movement against the war in Chechnya in the eyes of the Russian public as well as the world community.
We, ordinary people of the Chechen nation, who have been thrown and bound together by universal pain and tragedy, firmly declare that we are not members of any political organisations or movements. All that we do pursues the only goal: to stop the bloodshed in our country.
Those who spread the groundless accusations should be aware of the fact that such malicious comments on someone else’s tragedy are inhuman.
